Old 7’s – Bridging the Past and the Future Capital Campaign
Helping preserve the rich history of Houston’s fire service
The Houston Fire Museum’s greatest “artifact” is its physical home. Housed in the historic Fire Station Number 7, this was the city’s first station built specifically for Houston’s original paid fire department in 1899. Today, the building, fondly called “Old 7’s,” is Houston’s oldest historic fire station still standing. In 1986 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was recorded as a Texas Historic Landmark in 1988.
It has been years since any preservation or restoration work has been completed within the historic Old 7’s Fire Station. The building is in urgent need of repair with structural problems, such as interior and exterior wall cracks. The building’s iconic facade hides structural issues that must be addressed to preserve the historical architecture for future generations. Recent water leaks forced the museum to place many exhibits in storage. In addition, the visitor experience is hindered by accessibility issues, no centralized air conditioning and heating system, as well as non-ADA compliant restrooms. Due to these conditions, the Museum is no longer able to safely and comfortably utilize the space to accommodate visitors.
The Trustees of the Houston Fire Museum have developed a vision to restore and preserve the historic Station Number 7, while also enhancing indoor spaces to support innovative educational and community programming. The Houston Fire Museum is excited to embark on Phase I of Old 7’s – Bridging the Past and the Future Capital Campaign. Through this project, Houston’s Fire Station Number 7 will be fully restored to its former glory, reflecting the pride of our city and our fire department.
